Day 3
Writing in a notebook
1/3/2015
Hi, Evan is back.
Something kind of suspicious and crazy happened yesterday. I was on the phone with my Grandma Anna and she said something like, “Are you looking forward to your new sister?“
I was like, “ What? “
And Grandma Anna just paused for a super long time on the other side.
So I repeated “ What?“ again.
Then my grandmother started to say something. She was mumbling.
“Could you give the phone back to your mother, Evan?“
I was going to need to hear more about this “new sister” thing. So I followed my mom around, hiding, trying to listen to what they were saying. I overheard my grandmother exclaim, “Oh, Becca, you really need to tell him that you are adopting.“
“But I can’t yet – “ Then Mom abruptly stopped talking, because she spotted me hiding behind her dresser.
“Evan, what are you doing? Were you spying on our conversion?“ she yelled angrily, blocking off the speaker of the phone.
I was feeling pretty angry myself. I came out from hiding and yelled back. “Why are you adopting a daughter when you have a perfectly fine son right here?“
“Because when I had you, Evan, I really wanted a daughter too. When you were five and four, I tried so much. I wanted another child. It became obvious that I could only have one child. So I searched around with the adoption agencies. I found the perfect girl. I. I thought that now that you are older and more mature you would understand. So here I am.”
I was so shocked. My mouth gaped in surprise. My throat felt dry.
“What do you think?” Mom asked, before adding, “There’s no need to be jealous.”
I was planning on being harsh, but then I took a breath, washing away the mean comment in my mind so I could respond the way she wanted me to.
“I would like to meet her.“
We are going to visit my new sister next week.
